Brazil will host, in 2025, the 20th Annual Meeting of the Technical Committee on Tourism of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). ISO is an international organization that discusses and establishes quality and safety tests and standards for various sectors, including tourism. Embratur coordinated the coordination to bring the event to the country during this year's meeting, which took place from June 3 to 7 in Marseille, in the south of France.
The technical committee has the participation of 105 countries and 20 organizations, with experts and scholars to discuss quality standards and good practices for tourism. Among them, the group includes UN Tourism, Small Business Standards (SBS) and the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF).
The 2025 plenary will take place in May, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). In 2026, the meeting will be in China and, in 2027, in South Korea. It was up to the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, to confirm Brazil as the host of the event, during this year's meeting. In the committee, the country works on adventure tourism and sustainable tourism through the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), which also participated in the coordination.
In addition to Embratur and ABNT, the Ministry of Tourism, the National Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), the Brazilian Association of Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism Companies (Abeta) and Sebrae worked to bring the annual meeting to Brazil.
The coordinator of Nature and Special Segments at Embratur, Leonardo Persi, acts as coordinator of the adventure tourism working group in the plenary. He highlighted that the coming of the meeting to the country is “historic”.
“Brazil has participated in the committee since 2006, when it was created. It is the opportunity for Brazil to host a major event and act to promote sustainability, safety and other good practices in adventure tourism and ecotourism and other sectors of this diverse activity. We will also put the country in the spotlight for international leaders both in debates and in the promotion of Brazilian destinations involved with the event”, he stated.
